Applying for an OASIS self-exclusion is easier — and faster — than most people think. Anyone who has decided can be permanently blocked at every casino, arcade and sports betting operator licensed in Germany in under 15 minutes. This guide covers both routes (online via the operator, in writing to the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt) and answers the most common questions.
**If you're in an acute crisis right now:** BZgA hotline 0800 137 27 00 (free, anonymous, 24/7). You can still apply for the block later — but talk to someone first.
**What OASIS is.** The nationwide self-exclusion register under § 8 GlüStV is a central federal database operated by the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt. Every GGL-licensed operator must check OASIS before each registration and each deposit. Anyone blocked is rejected — automatically. Background and fundamentals: [Lifting an OASIS self-exclusion](/en/blog/oasis-self-exclusion-lift-guide-2026).
**Route 1 — directly with the casino or bookmaker.** Every GGL-licensed operator must provide an OASIS exclusion form inside your account area (usually under 'Player Protection' or 'Self-Protection'). Fill in the form (personal data, exclusion duration), confirm — the block is written into the central register within minutes and immediately applies to every operator. Upside: no paper, no wait. Downside: you need to be briefly logged in.
**Route 2 — in writing to the Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt.** Download the application form from [oasis.hessen.de](https://www.oasis.hessen.de), sign it and mail it with a copy of a valid ID to: Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt, Sperrdatei, Luisenplatz 2, 64283 Darmstadt. Upside: no operator account required. Downside: processing takes 3–10 working days.
**Information required.** Full name, date and place of birth, current address, ID number, exclusion type (self- or third-party), duration (minimum 1 year, indefinite is the recommended default). The block is free — both at operators and at the authority.
**How fast the block takes effect.** Route 1 (operator): typically active nationwide in under 5 minutes. Route 2 (mail): from the day the authority processes your application. Until then existing accounts stay open — if you want to be safe, take route 1 at your main operator and lock yourself out immediately.
**What happens to open balances.** Withdrawable balance (after completed KYC) is transferred to the deposited bank account. Open bonus balance with unmet wagering typically expires — this is also in the T&Cs. If you want to clear a bonus first, clarify with the operator before applying; the fair answer is usually: just block yourself, the balance isn't worth waiting for.
**Choosing the duration.** Minimum 1 year is mandatory. Indefinite is the default and usually the better choice: an indefinite block can be lifted in writing any time after 1 year (see [Lifting a block](/en/blog/oasis-self-exclusion-lift-guide-2026)). A time-limited block, by contrast, ends automatically — even if you'd be more unstable a year later than before.
**What OASIS doesn't cover.** Operators without a GGL licence (Curaçao, MGA, Anjouan) don't check against OASIS — they're illegal in Germany but technically reachable. Anyone playing at such an operator after being self-excluded loses every consumer protection. Also not covered: unstaked prediction leagues, crypto casinos, trading apps.
**For relatives.** If you're worried about a family member, you can request a third-party exclusion. The route is similar; the Regierungspräsidium adds a short hearing.
**Bottom line.** The application is the easy part. If you're unsure, take the operator route — 5 minutes, immediate effect, no paper. And if you're hesitating: that's usually exactly when the block is right. It's not finality, it's a deliberately designed cooling-off.
