How long does an OASIS self-exclusion last? — Deadlines, lifting, process
OASIS is Germany's nationwide gambling self-exclusion system. We explain the minimum duration, how to apply for a lifting, how long it really takes, and which operators are affected — based on the official GGL rules.

Note for international readers: OASIS only applies in Germany. It is operated by the Joint Gambling Authority of the German federal states (GGL). Every licensed German operator — online casinos, sports betting, gaming halls, casinos — must check OASIS before access. The exclusion is immediate and nationwide.
Minimum duration: 3 months. This is statutory (§8a German State Treaty on Gambling). Shorter self-exclusions are not possible. Anyone self-excluding today can apply for lifting only after 3 months — they cannot resume playing automatically after 3 months.
Types of exclusion: Self-exclusion (player-requested, unlimited until lifting), third-party exclusion (requested by relatives or operator, court-reviewable), and authority exclusion (imposed after indicators like debt, documented gambling disorder).
Lifting process: After the minimum duration, a written application must be filed with the GGL. Form is available at gluecksspiel-behoerde.de. Processing time: typically 1–4 weeks, longer in complex cases. Only after positive decision is the exclusion lifted — nothing happens automatically.
Important: The exclusion does NOT lapse automatically after 3 months. If no lifting application is filed, the exclusion stays in place indefinitely. This is by design — active reactivation forces a deliberate decision about whether the player really wants to resume.
Attempting to play while excluded: Operators must deny access. Deposits are refunded, any winnings are kept by the operator (multiple court rulings confirm this — winning despite exclusion gives no claim). Repeated circumvention attempts can trigger an additional authority exclusion.
Circumventing OASIS is not possible: Checks run against ID data (name, date of birth). Other accounts, straw men or unlicensed foreign operators are not a way out — at licensed operators the check is enforced; at unlicensed operators you lose consumer protection entirely.
What to do during exclusion: Contact support services (BZgA hotline 0800 1 372 700, free, anonymous, 24/7). Sort gambling debts (free debt counselling via Verbraucherzentrale, Caritas, Diakonie). If you intend to apply for lifting after 3 months: honestly assess whether the issues that caused the exclusion are actually resolved.
Who can apply for lifting: Only the player themselves — for self-exclusion. Third-party and authority exclusions can only be lifted by the requesting body, often after proof (e.g. therapy certificate).
Bottom line: An OASIS self-exclusion is no on/off switch — it lasts at least 3 months, doesn't lift automatically, and is coordinated through the GGL. Anyone filing for lifting should honestly check whether resuming play is sensible. The exclusion is one of the most effective player-protection tools in Germany — exactly right when you can no longer trust yourself.
