Accumulator Bets: Why the Margin Grows With Every Leg

Combine five safe favourites and turn 10 euros into 80: accumulators are among the most popular bet types. For bookmakers they are also the most profitable. The reason is simple multiplication.

The basis. A single with a 5 % margin returns about 95 cents per euro on average. In an accumulator the odds are multiplied, and so are the payout rates.

The maths. 2 legs: 0.95² = 90.3 %. 3 legs: 85.7 %. 5 legs: 77.4 %. 10 legs: 59.9 %. On a 10-fold you lose around 40 cents per euro on average.

Why it does not feel that way. The total odds look huge, and losing by just one leg creates the feeling of almost winning. It is the same near-miss effect as with slots.

Acca boosts. Many operators add a few percent bonus on large accumulators. That usually only partly offsets the accumulated margin.

When accas are acceptable. As a small entertainment stake within a fixed budget. Over the long run, singles in low-margin markets are clearly better.

Bottom line. Every extra leg multiplies the margin. An accumulator is mathematically a more expensive product than the same picks as singles.
